We have a group here in Costa Rica, starting a community with a very different philosophy from yours. Our community, Gaiasana, is in the financing stage, is aimed at having some 100 families, dedicated to reconstructing native forest (as opposed to mere ‘reforestation'.), will be ‘high tech' rather than primitive. We are aiming at being neutral as to diet and spirituality, permitting just about anything in these areas but not orientated toward any particular one.

Some times we discuss things in the tropicalic.tribe.net net and all are welcome there too. We are in the hills near Puriscal from 500 to 1,000 meters above sea level and in the future could well produce organic food items that need a higher elevation in exchange for items you are producing down near the beach.

The other communities that I know off and that are active here in Costa Rica are the ecovillage at Punta Mona on the Caribbean Coast and Durika, East of Buenos Aires in the foot hills of the Talamanca Range. I have visited the later one.

I'm presently in Escazu, 228-9733. But our community will be just West of Puriscal.

We are trying to stay away from certain words that have become meaningless! Two of them are "reforestation" and the prefix "eco-". Reforestation used to mean reestablishing the native forest but it became changed to be the same as tree farming, planting with pine, melina or such. An ecoproject is some huge very unecological structure that someone planted a tree in front of! Anyway, we say reconstructing the native forest,

Something you can start right away in your pasture to be forest, is to plant it to madero negro (the living fence posts). To get started, most native forest trees need shade to get started as seedlings. The madero negro trees act as "nurse trees" to allow them to get started right.

By all means call me. The next time you are up in the capital we can meet and make plans.
